How did dogs get to be our best friends? What do they really know? The documentary film Dogs Decoded may shed some light on those and many more questions; it will surprise you in many ways. Dogs Decoded is a PBS/Nova documentary directed by Dan Child. PBS categorizes it as a “Nature” documentary but it seems to go beyond the nature label in to how humans interact with a very important animal, one that may have helped humans survive over thousands of years.
One of the first things Dogs Decoded looks at is where did dogs come from? Are they the domesticated descendants of wolves? Are they a separate species? Research into dog DNA helps resolve these questions. In the light of this new evidence the documentary explores the relationship between humans and dogs going back longer than a few thousand years.
Can dogs understand human language? Do they acquire a vocabulary that allows us to communicate with them? Do they communicate with humans? Dogs Decoded answers these and many other questions. In one sequence you will meet a dog that will amaze you with its abilities.
Dogs Decoded connects the dots in science’s search to find out more about how dogs evolved, along with humans for thousands and thousands of years. The documentary goes to a Russian outpost in Siberia where they have conducted a unique experiment to find out how animals become domesticated using foxes.
This is a unique documentary that anyone who owns a dog should watch. It is also of interest to the scientific community. It is well-directed, shot and edited. The format sets up a premiss, puts out some questions and then goes on to explore and find answers.
Dogs Decoded is a story you won’t forget and will be talking about to your friends and family. I still don’t know why my dog watches TV, or what she’s thinking while she does, but I know it’s not chance that she barks at other dogs when they come on the screen. I also now recognize what kind of bark she uses in these cases.
